"The Hunter" by Jennifer Warnes. Released 1992.
Jennifer Warnes? Jennifer Warnes? JENNIFER WARNES PEOPLE! The flow of a voice in its prime can play my heartstrings like that of a master and its puppet. The Hunter, arent we all hunters? Scouring that stark landscape for the elusive mate? The wait has been agonising for this CD after the magnificent Famous Blue Rain. It was released in 1992 but trying to track a copy down has been fruitless. Until yesterday! The Album is a testament by continuing the evolution of Jennifer Warnes and my admiration of her, the recording and content is beyond words. The album starts with the warm rich bass track Rock you gently. The swaying and the rhythm that this track exhibits is phenomenal. The richness reminds me of Bird on a Wire. You can picture a god like coliseum of music that engulfs you; Jennifers voice pokes through the morning mist of instruments and lifts the quality of the song. The instruments playing are too numerous to mention, but are so intricately weaved around the sound stage they are in perfect harmony. The album like so many that we have reviewed has a story or a theme, if your familiar with Jennifers work youll find indeed the title is fitting in regards to most of her work. The album will give your system a work out from its detailed highs to its synthesiser powered lows. The pattern that Jennifer follows is perhaps the path that we all seem to find, not all those who wander are lost I believe a great story teller once wrote, Jennifers Somewhere Somebody is so fitting. Down so deep, creates a twister of emotions as the sound stage becomes 3D and the bass pulses through the room, the 6inchs-lack depth with this track, a nice woofer system would clean it up in the lower octaves of sound. It all ends with the finale The Hunter, I find this track to be sorrow filled when listened without company. Perhaps Jennifers voice will be lost among the great artists that cease to inspire this generation, the words dont need to rhyme they just need to sink, as Van Morrison sings just soaking it up in my mind. Keep it flyin Miss Warnes, at least for us.....Reviewer Megan |

"Down the Road" by Van Morrison. Released 2002.
As Ben Sidran put it…There are not many roads. There is only one road, infinitely connected, like the grooves on an old record, endlessly leading away from home and back towards home at the same time. Its all one long journey and travelling is just what we do to stay alive.
Isnt this true? Our origins forever receding, but forever in the foreground. Foreordained perhaps? The mellifluous tap of the piano, the obbligato created by the vocals makes your mind wander and reminisce about Percy Sledge…..Van can do no wrong…
You could travel about the structure of this album and ruminate your life away. Me, im going to give you a tantalizing insight through words…. Just a glimpse.
Just like the sunshine after rain
Ill come
To be with you will save the day
Cos I know
When im with you again
You just steal my heart away.
Pete Hurley sets the stage and warmth with bass. The richness and New Orleans sway is added with the sax, a simple elegant touch of sugar through the flute. The acoustic guitar brings back the jam sense, which creates spice while uplifting the emotions. Theres nothing better than being an observer, the magnetism created by the image of a jazz band that work in union. A malady of the heart seems so poignant. Our world creates the disease and for one tiny pinprick in time Van creates a sojourn cure.
Listen Mr DJ
Wont you play me something slow
Play me the songs
For the lonely ones
Play me something
That I know
The ever present Bobby Irwin keeps the tempo with a nice solid sweep and kick and the epitome of the high hats. Fiachra Trench creates a base for Vans vocals, the sax and organ glorify the beat. Just two songs ive covered 14 in all grace this newest offering from Van Morrison. This music needs no certain mood to be enjoyed, in the moment is all it needs. This recording will pick at your system, like the string arrangements that are so delicately woven among the songs. As Van once sang in a duet………Keep on keeping on…….- Reviewer Megan
